Why Wicked Works
This May I went to go see the new musical Wicked. And did it live up to the hype...? Is the Pope Catholic? I've been thinking and here are a couple of reasons why I think this musical appeals to so many.
- 1. Clever Music. It was a feast for the ears.
- 2. It's hilarious.
- 3. People like familiarity, but they want to see something new-(thank you captain obvious) . But seriously, this story is a great twist on an old favorite.
- 4. Elpheba(the wicked witch of the west) has what I like to call the "Harry Potter factor". So and so has been made fun of/been the loser their whole life until one day they find out they are special/magical/famous/awesome. It's the ultimate underdog story. People love the common wo/man, especially when they find out s/he really is freakin amazing.
- 5. The production (the set, actors, costumes, ensemble) was quite impressive. Everything was really well done. I didn't really have any complaints in the end. It helps to have a stellar Broadway budget and the best talent around, but really- all the money and talent in the world can't make up for a bad musical.
And there you have it. It's not the best list ever but it was on my mind. Feel free to add your reasons why you love or hate this musical.
